Shoalhaven Ex-Services Group was formed in 1945 to provide an Ex-Servicemen’s Club and Memorial. The significance of supporting and recognising the Veteran Community is as important today as it was over 70 years ago when we opened. We have created Shoalhaven Veteran Connect, a platform to connect individuals with Veteran support groups and organisations in the Shoalhaven.

All day: Victory in the Pacific Day15 August, 2024 All day VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August. This date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender 14 August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over. The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day. In August 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as VP Day and most newspapers reported it as such. However, the governments of Britain, the United States and New Zealand preferred VJ Day. It is not true, as some have claimed, that the day was originally called VJ and that the name was surreptitiously changed later. |

All day: Vietnam Veterans Day18 August, 2024 All day On 18 August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War. This year we remember 55 years since the Battle of Long Tan and 50 years since the cessation of Australian combat operations in Vietnam. From the time of the arrival of the first ADF members in 1962, almost 60,000 Australians, including ground troops, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy personnel served in Vietnam. 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded. |
